The 1938 ISDT...a pictorial view....
I did a post on Stuart Waycott's special 598cc SOHC Velocette outfit and his participation in the prewar ISDT on December 6th 2010 and in it featured his participation in the ISDT and especially 1938 so a review of the photos used would be interesting.
What is the ISDT ?? The International Six Days Trial.....It was really big prewar and countries entered teams competing for the several prestigious trophies.
Hitler's Germany with its sports director were particularly active in looking to win these events, purely for political means.
Great Britain responded and we will look, photographically at the 1938 event, based in Llandrindod Wells, Wales as it was the previous year, 1937.
Map of the six days routes, starting and finishing daily at Llandrindod Wells. Most of the routes were between 430 and 450 km each day over poor tracks and the trial finished with speed tests on the last day.
Riders starting for the day. I'm unable to determine which day this is, however the outfit #32 is the 590cc Jawa entry of F.Janecek with the driver listed as F.Juhan, both of the Czechoslovakia.
#65, 494cc BMW outfit entered by the German National Socialist group N.S.K.K and ridden by R.Seltsam.
The Dutch A Vase team...#90 J.Bovee, #101 A.P.v.Hamersveld and #66 J.Roest all on 500 BMW's, and entered by the Dutch controling body the K.N.M.V.
Crowds in Llandrindod Wells, outside Tom Norton's Garage, listening to a broadcast of the event by Graham Walker.
A UK War Office entry, #78, a 500 BSA ridden by D.T. Dalby, somewhere on the route....
The going looks ok....
The going looks a little harder...day 5, the caption of the rear of my pic says...Ffrydd-Croestry. Presumably the area, but I'm unable to locate it on the atlas maps I have.
#105 is the NSU-Werke, the factory NSU entry , a 593cc NSU outfit, ridden by H.Dunz.
The going looks harder still....
#84, Stuart Waycott on the special 598cc ex TT SOHC engined Velocette with (Australian) Goulding sidecar.
